In 1909, St. Marks Square in Venice was the civic heart of a city that had become part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, after centuries as a sea power and then Austrian rule. Its economy leaned on tourism, glassmaking on Murano, and the steamers and shipping that kept the lagoon port connected to the mainland and the Adriatic. The square's cafés, including Florian's, drew visitors and local residents for conversation and music in the evenings. The bell tower beside the Basilica had collapsed in 1902, and in 1909 it was still being rebuilt, a visible sign of the city's effort to restore its landmarks while it balanced preservation against modern demands.
