Milan in 1909 was Italy's leading manufacturing and banking city, with textile mills, engineering works, and new electric tramlines drawing workers in from the surrounding Lombard countryside. The Simplon railway tunnel, opened in 1906, had brought Milan closer to Switzerland and northern Europe, and the city was growing quickly as a commercial center. Piazza del Duomo, fronted by the Gothic cathedral and linked to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, served as the city's ceremonial heart, where crowds gathered for civic events and Sunday promenades. Milanese residents of the period would have known the square as a place where the old city's churches and arcades met the bustle of modern commerce.
