Milan in 1909 was one of Italy's leading industrial and commercial cities, a center of engineering, silk and textile production, and rail traffic linking the country to Switzerland and northern Europe. The city had grown rapidly since the 1880s, drawing workers from the countryside into factories and new working-class districts on its edges. The Duomo, begun in the 14th century and still unfinished in its facade, stood at the heart of the old city and was the main civic and religious gathering place, where crowds passed through the open square on feast days and market days. Visitors and residents alike knew the cathedral's white marble spires as the symbol of the city, and the square around it was the spot where trams, carriages and pedestrians met. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, completed in 1877, stood just beside it and drew shoppers and cafe patrons.
