Milan in 1909 was the industrial and financial center of Italy, with textile mills, engineering works, and a population that had passed half a million. The Piazza del Duomo, shown here before the cathedral, served as the city's civic heart, where trams, carriages, and pedestrians crossed daily. The Duomo, begun in 1386, still lacked its completed marble facade, which was finished only in the early nineteenth century under Napoleon's rule, though it was already the city's most recognized landmark. Beside the square, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, opened in 1878, drew shoppers and café patrons, linking commerce with public life. The Expo of 1906 had recently brought visitors and investment to Milan, and the city's growth was reshaping streets around its old core.
