Milan in 1909 was the industrial and commercial heart of northern Italy, a city of factories, rail lines, and a growing working population drawn from the countryside. The Piazza del Duomo was its civic center, where the cathedral's marble facade, still unfinished in its upper reaches, rose over the square. The equestrian statue of King Victor Emmanuel II, unveiled in 1896, stood in front of the church as a reminder of the national unification that Milan had helped to bring about. The 1906 opening of the Simplon Tunnel had recently brought the city closer to Switzerland and northern Europe, and Milanese businessmen were looking to rail and trade links as they expanded their mills and workshops.
