Pisa in 1909 was a provincial city in Tuscany that had long since lost the maritime power it held in the High Middle Ages, when its fleets contested trade with Genoa and Venice. By the early twentieth century its economy rested on agriculture, small manufacturing, and a growing number of visitors arriving by the rail line that connected the city to Florence and the Ligurian coast. The Campo dei Miracoli, the walled green where the cathedral, baptistry, and bell tower stand, drew tourists and photographers, and the tower's lean, which had been noticed since construction in the twelfth century, was already a famous curiosity. This panorama records that scene as travelers of the period would have known it, with the monuments of the old republic still the city's defining landmarks.
