Rome in 1909 was the capital of a kingdom only about four decades old, unified under the House of Savoy in 1870, and it was in the middle of a building boom as the city expanded well beyond its old walls. Tourism was a major part of its economy, with visitors arriving by rail from across Europe and America to see the ancient monuments that defined the city's reputation. The Colosseum, the vast amphitheater built under the Flavian emperors nearly two thousand years earlier, had been partly excavated and stabilized by the Italian state in the decades before, and it stood as the city's most famous ruin. This panoramic view of its interior shows the arena and tiered seating as a traveler of the period would have encountered them, a place of imperial spectacle that by then drew crowds of sightseers rather than gladiatorial audiences.
