Rome's Colosseum in 1909 was a monument already well over eighteen centuries old, and the city around it was in the middle of a major transformation. Rome had become the capital of a unified Italy only in 1871, and the decades after brought new government ministries, wide boulevards cut through older neighborhoods, and a rising population drawn from the countryside. Tourism was growing steadily, with visitors from Britain, Germany, and the United States arriving by rail to tour the ancient ruins. The interior view captures the great arena's tiered seating and open floor, which by then were studied by archaeologists working to uncover the hypogeum beneath the sand.
