The Roman Forum, seen from a hill above it in 1909, sat at the heart of a capital that had only belonged to a unified Italy since 1871. Rome's population was climbing past half a million, fed by civil servants, construction workers, and migrants from the countryside, after a building boom in the 1880s gave way to hard times following the banking crisis of 1893. Excavation of the ancient ruins was led by Giacomo Boni, whose digs since the late 1890s, including the Lapis Niger, drew scholars and tourists who came to see Roman stonework set among new government offices. For many visitors, the forum stood for an ancient past being recovered while the modern capital grew around it.
