A footbridge crossing still water at Magnolia Gardens, on the Ashley River outside Charleston, anchors this view, with Spanish moss trailing from the trees and reflected in the water below. The gardens grew out of the Drayton family's plantation, and by the early 1900s they drew visitors touring the Lowcountry, a trade the Detroit Publishing Company served with travel views like this one. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format valued for its sharp detail.
