Colonial Lake, a small body of water in the Harleston Village area of Charleston, South Carolina, was once a tidal marsh that the city reshaped into a landscaped park in the 19th century. This c1906 view was made on a glass dry plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns and scenery for sale to tourists and publishers in the years before and after 1900. Charleston was a popular winter destination by then, and the company's views show how its visitors saw the city's gardens, water, and waterfront.
