The Upper Lake at Magnolia Cemetery, a landscaped waterway among the graves on Charleston's northern edge, is the focus of this view. Magnolia opened in 1850 in the rural cemetery style, which set burial grounds among ponds, winding paths, and old trees as places for quiet reflection. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns and scenery around 1900 to 1920, made the large glass negative, so the image records how a Southern cemetery was presented to visitors in the early twentieth century.
