Canoes drift on still water beneath draping Spanish moss in this view of the lake at Magnolia-on-the-Ashley, the plantation gardens on the Ashley River just outside Charleston. The garden's lakes and winding paths were a major attraction for visitors who came to see its azaleas and old live oaks, and the scene shows how the grounds were used for leisure as well as admired for their plantings. The picture was made around 1907 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its widely sold views of American scenery and towns, and its glass negative records the kind of genteel southern landscape the company marketed to travelers.
