A steamer tied up at the landing sets this view apart, marking the dock that served Magnolia-on-the-Ashley, the plantation gardens on the river outside Charleston. By the early 1900s those gardens drew steady numbers of visitors, and river steamers were among the simplest ways to reach them from the city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs like this for travel promotion, recorded many Southern scenes in these years, making the picture a useful glimpse of how tourism shaped the Ashley River waterfront.
