Perched on a rocky ridge above the town of Nafplio, the Palamidi fortress overlooks the gulf that this card calls the best harbor in Greece. Venetian engineers built its defenses in the early 1700s, and the castle later changed hands among Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek forces. Nafplio served as the first capital of modern Greece in the late 1820s and early 1830s, which gave the harbor below real political weight. Underwood & Underwood issued this stereo view as one of many travel scenes meant for home viewers with a stereoscope.
