Mantinea's towered wall, photographed from the west-southwest toward the mountains, stands near the site of one of the best-known battles of classical Greece. In 362 B.C., a Theban army under Epaminondas defeated a Spartan-led coalition on these plains, a victory that briefly made Thebes the leading power in Greece, though Epaminondas was killed in the fighting. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood around 1907 as a stereograph, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope so the ruins appear to stand in three dimensions.
