Shan-hai-kwan, where the Great Wall meets the sea, is the detail that sets this stereograph apart from the many views of the wall's interior and mountain sections. The fortress sits at the eastern terminus of the wall, guarding the narrow pass between the Liao Hsi hills and the Gulf of Pe-Chi-li (the Bohai Gulf). Underwood & Underwood, the American firm that produced stereo cards for home parlor viewers, issued scenes like this one around 1904 for armchair travelers who would never see China in person. The card's caption data is unverified, so the exact vantage point and date should be treated with some caution.
