In this stereograph, the photographer himself is the subject: Professor James Ricalton is shown at work on a platform built for Underwood & Underwood, the American firm that sold stereo views to a mass audience. The setting is the Great Durbar at Delhi, the ceremony of 1903 that proclaimed Edward VII as Emperor of India. The image records how the event was documented for armchair travelers, with the photographer's own equipment and position part of the scene. The record's dating and identifications come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
