Labeled the Great Palace of the Maharaja, this stereo card shows the City Palace complex in Jaipur, a walled capital that Sawai Jai Singh II laid out in 1727 on a grid of streets. By the time this view was made, around 1907, Madho Singh II held the throne of Jaipur State, and the city's rose-colored buildings were already famous. Stereograph cards like this one, issued by the H.C. White Co., were sold in large numbers to viewers in America and Europe who could never make the trip, so the picture reflects both the palace itself and the Western appetite for distant places.
