The gates of Abdin Palace, a sprawling royal residence in central Cairo, are the subject here, rather than the palace's interior or its gardens. Construction of Qasr al-Abdin began in the 1860s under Khedive Ismail, who wanted a European-style palace to rival those of Paris and Istanbul, and it went on to serve as a royal residence and a seat of government for decades. By the time this photograph was taken around 1924, the palace still stood as a symbol of the Egyptian monarchy's authority. The picture comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter collection, a body of travel photographs that documents how foreign visitors saw Egypt in the years after World War I.
