Here the courtyard of the Palace of the Doges, the seat of government of the Venetian Republic, is paired with the dome of St. Mark's Basilica rising beyond the palace roofline. The card was issued by H.C. White, a Vermont firm that produced stereoviews of sites around the world for parlor stereoscopes. Looking through the viewer fused two nearly identical photographs into one three-dimensional scene, a popular form of armchair travel around 1909.
