The Pitti Palace, the great Renaissance residence on the Oltrarno side of the Arno in Florence, is the subject here, shown through its courtyard rather than its famous façade. The Pitti was begun around 1458 for the banker Luca Pitti, and the Medici family later acquired it and expanded it into their principal seat, so its courtyards reflect centuries of grand-ducal building. Alinari, the Florentine firm that issued this sepia photoprint, was among the most prolific publishers of views of Italian cities in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and their images were widely sold to travelers and collectors. The caption card carries no date, so the exact year of the photograph is unknown.
