The lazzaroni, a term for the poor and often idle working people of Naples, are the subject of this stereograph card from about 1902, issued by the H.C. White Company. Viewed through a hand stereoscope, the two nearly identical images merged into a single three-dimensional scene, a popular way for armchair travelers to see distant places. Naples drew many foreign visitors for its crowded streets, and the lazzaroni appeared often in travel accounts and pictures of the city. The caption tracings file the card under geography, children and beggars, which shows how such street life was packaged as a view of local character.
