Survivors cooking a meal in a makeshift camp show daily life after the disaster that struck Messina, on the Strait of Messina in Sicily. The earthquake hit early on December 28, 1908, and was followed by a tsunami that flooded the waterfront, leaving much of the city in ruins and tens of thousands dead. This stereograph was issued by the Keystone View Company, a firm that sold stereo cards widely to American audiences, so viewers at home could see the aftermath through the paired images. The card's record dates the view to about 1909, when relief efforts and temporary shelter were still underway.
