This stereograph turns to the iron workings of eastern Cuba, where a mining camp in Santiago Province stood in the years after the Spanish-American War. American investors moved quickly into the island's mineral lands once Spanish rule ended in 1898, and ore from the region was destined for steel production in the United States. The card was issued around 1899 by Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm that sold stereo views for parlors, schools, and travelers' collections. Seen through a stereoscope, the camp would have appeared in startling depth, offering home viewers a close look at an industry far from their own towns.
