Street-level views of David, the capital of Chiriquí Province in western Panama, offer a glimpse of a provincial town rather than the canal works that dominated most images of the isthmus at the time. David lies inland from the Pacific, far west of the Canal Zone, so its daily life ran on a different rhythm from the construction camps. Panama had become an independent republic only in 1903, and towns like David were still shaping their streets, markets and civic life in those early years. The caption card dates the print to between 1907 and 1910, but that date is unverified, so it is best read as approximate.
