A team of sled dogs and their driver stand on a street in Alaska, with the harnessed animals and sled marking winter travel as an everyday part of life in the territory. The stereo card was copyrighted by the Keystone View Company, a commercial publisher of stereographs, and its caption tags link the scene to the Klondike and to gold-mining towns from the region's boom period in the late 1890s. Dog teams carried mail, freight and passengers where roads were scarce, so the picture shows a working vehicle as much as a novelty. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images would have given the street a convincing sense of depth.
