A street in Colón, the Atlantic port at the northern end of the Panama Canal, appears in this c1904 photograph, and the record notes that its date and details come from an unverified caption card. The picture falls in the years when the United States was taking over the canal project from the French company that had begun it. The Canal Zone was set up under a 1903 treaty, and the work that followed drew workers, merchants and supplies into port towns like Colón. Views of ordinary streets from this period show the bustle of that transition more clearly than the grand engineering works.
