Taken on August 15, 1914, the day the Panama Canal officially opened to shipping, this view shows the steamer S.S. Ancon approaching the Cucaracha Slide, looking north. The Ancon made the first official transit of the waterway that day, and Cucaracha was one of the most troublesome stretches of the Culebra Cut, where unstable soil repeatedly slid into the channel during construction. The picture captures the moment when roughly a decade of engineering work was put to use. The caption details come from an unverified old card, so the specifics of the setting are worth reading with that in mind.
