Wrecking cranes are shown hauling a steam shovel, No. 231, out of the Cucaracha slide, a mass of collapsed earth in the Panama Canal's Culebra Cut. The cut was the most difficult stretch of the canal, and slides there repeatedly buried equipment and halted excavation during the American construction effort. The photograph is dated October 4, 1909, and the caption card records it as a view of the Canal Zone's landslide problems, a reminder of how much of the work was spent clearing debris rather than digging new ground.
