Colón, on the Caribbean coast at the northern mouth of the Panama Canal, is the setting for this photographic print of its fire department, dated to about 1907. By then the city was crowded with workers and supplies for the American-led canal project, and wooden construction was common, which made fire a constant danger. The caption card's details are unverified, so the exact crew, equipment and location in the city remain uncertain, but the picture still offers a glimpse of civic life in the early years of the Canal Zone.
