Listed as Panama City, with a question mark attached to the place name, this view leaves its exact location uncertain. It belongs to the John Barrett Collection, and Barrett, who served as United States minister to Panama, had diplomatic and commercial ties to the region. The date range falls just after Panama separated from Colombia in 1903 and during the building of the Panama Canal, when the city's ports, banks and commerce drew wide foreign attention. The caption card's tracings for geography, foreign trade and banks reflect that commercial focus.
