A stereo card published by C.H. Graves of Philadelphia around 1902 shows a Hong Kong street market, with two slightly offset views that merge into a single image of depth when seen through a stereoscope. Hong Kong had been a British colony since 1842, and by the early 1900s its busy Chinese districts drew Western photographers and publishers eager to show foreign commerce. Cards like this one, sold in Universal Photo Art Company mounts, were part of a large trade in armchair travel that let American families look at distant places from their parlors.
