The Summer Palace, an imperial retreat in the hills northwest of Peking, is the subject of this stereograph, and the title's mention of visitors points to people gathering at its grounds. British and French forces had damaged the site in 1860, and it suffered again during the 1900 Boxer upheaval, so by the time this card was made around 1902 it bore the marks of foreign intervention. C.H. Graves issued the card as one of many China views made for the parlor stereoscope, which gave viewers a sense of depth in distant scenes. Through the viewer, the two nearly identical images merge into one three-dimensional picture.
