The Forbidden City's Hall of Supreme Harmony, the throne room of the Qing emperors, is the subject here, shown as a stereograph meant to be viewed through a hand-held lens device. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued this card around 1900, when stereo views of distant places were a popular parlor entertainment. The imperial palace in Peking had been closed to most outsiders for centuries, so cards like this offered many American viewers their only glimpse of its interiors. The paired images give the room a sense of depth that a flat photograph cannot, and the gilded throne and dragon motifs are worth studying closely.
