A bird's-eye view from above the Plaza de Armas in Mexico City shows cannons firing a salute into a crowd, marking the 5th of May, the national holiday commemorating the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. William Henry Jackson, the American photographer who traveled widely in Mexico in the mid-1880s, made the picture, and the record dates it to between 1884 and 1885. The elevated viewpoint captures the density of the gathering and the carts and wagons moving through the square. The date and some caption details come from an older, unverified card, so the exact moment should be read with that in mind.
