Maximilian's carriage, photographed in a Mexico City museum, is a tangible reminder of the short-lived Second Mexican Empire. The Austrian archduke took the throne in 1864 with backing from Napoleon III of France, but his rule ended in 1867, when republican forces captured and executed him. Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm known for its stereo views, issued this card around 1901, and its title, "A remnant of Mexican imperialism," shows how the episode was remembered by then.
