The title places this print at Churubusco, a town just south of Mexico City, where fighting on August 20, 1847 was among the sharpest engagements of Winfield Scott's campaign toward the capital. The battle centered on the church and convent buildings there, and the American victory helped open the road into Mexico City. Nathaniel Currier's New York shop issued hand-colored lithographs like this one for a public eager for war news. The catalog record dates the sheet to about 1846, which is earlier than the battle it shows, so researchers should read that date with caution.
