The doorways and architectural details on this card point to the Colegio de San Ignacio de Loyola, better known as Las Vizcaínas, a building in central Mexico City raised in the 18th century. A society of Basque merchants founded the school to house and educate girls and young women, many of them orphans or from families of Basque origin. Its carved entrances and masonry reflect the Baroque style that shaped much of the city's religious and institutional architecture in that period. The enclosed, convent-like complex remains one of the best-known colonial-era institutions still standing in the capital.
