A lateral altar in the Chapel of La Purísima, inside the Iglesia de la Regina in Mexico City, is the focus of this view, with its doorways and shelving visible around the altarpiece. The caption card, marked as unverified, credits the photograph to Kahlo and records no date, so the exact year is uncertain. Mexico City's colonial churches often held elaborate gilded altarpieces, and early twentieth-century photographers recorded such interiors as part of a wider effort to document the country's architecture and religious art.
