What sets this view apart is its focus on the open chapel, a roofed arcade projecting from the front of the church of San Jerónimo in Tlamaco, rather than the building as a whole. Open chapels were a common feature of mendicant churches in New Spain during the 16th century, when friars needed room for large congregations that could not fit inside. The arcade and the plain stone facade reflect the practical, sturdy design of those early colonial churches. The caption card gives no date, so the photograph's exact age is unknown, but its subject belongs to that long building tradition.
