Few images from the early 1900s show a working Mexican carpet factory as clearly as this stereograph does. It depicts the Santa Gertrudes works near Orizaba in Veracruz, a region known for its textile mills and factories fed by nearby rivers and the rail line to the coast. Underwood & Underwood, a firm that sold stereoviews of travel and industry to American households, produced cards like this one around 1903, when the Díaz government was courting foreign investment and promoting modern manufacturing. The caption data was recorded long after the photograph was taken and has not been verified, so the exact date and the factory's operations deserve a careful check against other sources.
