This picture shows a mural by Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueiros, but the wall is in Chillán, Chile, at the Escuela México, a school built with Mexican support after the 1939 earthquake devastated the region. The painting takes the history of Mexico as its theme and uses allegorical figures to tell it, a common approach for Siqueiros, who believed public murals should address working people and national memory. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year of the work is unconfirmed. Its placement far from Mexico makes it a notable example of Mexican muralism reaching across Latin America.
