A matador and a bull share the arena in this scene, with the bull's head turned toward the left edge of the frame, which draws the eye to the animal's power. The caption card gives no date, but the Mutual Film Corporation credit and the George Grantham Bain Collection suggest a photoprint from the 1910s, when the Bain News Service supplied pictures of news and events from around the world. Bullfighting came to Mexico with Spanish colonists in the 1500s and grew into a popular spectacle in its bullrings, so the photograph offers a glimpse of a tradition that still draws crowds.
