Nochistongo was a long cut through the hills north of Mexico City, built to drain the closed Valley of Mexico and keep floodwaters out of the capital. Work on the drainage began in the early 1600s and went on in fits and starts for centuries, and the project was still unfinished when William Henry Jackson, working for the Detroit Photographic Company, photographed it around 1884 to 1885. The picture shows the channel as an engineering project in progress, a record of the effort to control a valley whose lake-bed setting had long made the city vulnerable to flooding.
