The Organ Mountains rise abruptly from the Chihuahuan Desert east of Las Cruces, and their jagged, pipe-like crags gave the range its name. This c1925 photoprint, issued by the Las Cruces photographer J.F. Gandara and numbered 155 on its caption card, shows the range as tourists and rail travelers of the era would have seen it from the valley floor. The record is thin, and its date and details come from the caption card rather than a verified source, but the scene captures how New Mexico's landscape was marketed to visitors in the early twentieth century, when scenic views of the Southwest were in steady demand.
