Trucks and horse-drawn wagons fill the foreground of this view of the American headquarters at Colonia Dublan, a farming settlement in Chihuahua, Mexico. The U.S. Army used the town as a supply base during the Punitive Expedition of 1916, the campaign led by General John J. Pershing to pursue Pancho Villa after his raid on Columbus, New Mexico, that March. The mix of motor vehicles and wagons shows how the expedition relied on both new and traditional transport in rugged terrain. The photograph was made by William Fox and issued by Underwood & Underwood, a commercial firm that sold news and travel views to the public.
