The picture shows the U.S. Army's Punitive Expedition into northern Mexico, launched in March 1916 after Francisco "Pancho" Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico. Commanded by General John J. Pershing, the force pursued Villa through Chihuahua for most of a year without capturing him. The print is credited to William Fox and carries the Underwood & Underwood copyright, a firm that sold large numbers of news and travel views to a popular market. The caption data comes from the original card and has not been independently verified, so the exact date and setting should be read with that in mind.
