Here a barber works at brigade headquarters near Casa Grande, Mexico, offering a glimpse of camp life during the U.S. Army's Punitive Expedition against Francisco "Pancho" Villa. Pershing's column had entered Chihuahua in March 1916 after Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, and spent months searching for him without success. Underwood and Underwood, a New York firm that distributed news and travel photographs widely, made the picture, and its April 10, 1916 date comes from an old caption card and may not be exact.
