Cliff ruins set into the rock walls near Fort Wingate, in western New Mexico, are the subject of this 1870s view. The photograph is credited to John K. Hillers, who joined John Wesley Powell's federal surveys of the American West in the early 1870s and later became known for his images of the Colorado Plateau and its ancient dwellings. The catalog date falls between 1873 and 1879, a period when survey photographers were documenting remote archaeological sites for the first time. The caption information is old and unverified, so the attribution of the Native group associated with the site should be treated with caution. Still, the scene reflects the ancestral Pueblo architecture that visitors and surveyors encountered across the region.
